Flower Insects

Have you noticed tiny insects jumping or hopping on your garden plants or trees? Leafhoppers are a category of insects that can cause tiny spots on leaves and spread plant diseases. Their feeding can cause leaf yellowing, leaf curling, and in some cases, leaf death.

There are several types of plant bugs that can cause damage to flowers.

Aphids are common on milkweeds and other types of flowers.

Leafminers feed between the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf.

Leafcutter bees cut circular or c-shaped sections from leaves of plants such as redbud, serviceberry, and rose.

Sawfly damage is done by larvae that resemble caterpillars. These insects feed in groups and can be found chewing the leaves of a variety of plants including roses, dogwoods, hibiscus, columbine, birch, and pines.

Boxelder bugs are a nuisance pest that sneaks into homes in late fall seeking a hiding place.

Planthoppers may be found on a variety of garden plants. Most species are just a temporary nuisance and do not require control.
